Session Description:

Words have the power to support, comfort, hurt, and harm, particularly when the listener is living with a life-limiting illness. This session will focus on ethical communication considerations for professionals providing hospice and palliative care to patients and their families. Considerations will be described, examples provided, and recommended strategies discussed. After participating in this session, attendees will be able to:

  • Recall at least three ethical communication considerations 
  • Describe how each consideration has the power to support or harm 
  • Explain the role ethical communication plays in building relationships with patients and families 
  • Discuss potential strategies for employing ethical communication


Meet Our Presenter:

Tracy Schroepfer, PhD, MSW, MA

Professor, Sandra Rosenbaum School of Social Work University of Wisconsin-Madison

Dr. Schroepfer is a professor at the University of Wisconsin-Madison School of Social Work and a recipient of the Hartford Geriatric Social Work Faculty Scholar Award. Dr. Schroepfer’s teaching and research are informed by her former practice as a hospice social worker and her prior and current national service. Her research focuses on determining the best strategies for meeting the psychosocial, cultural, and spiritual care needs of terminally ill older adults.
